Mensaje  Salomea Miér Abr 02, 2014 10:53 am

So Dear Ones welcome to my art school, where I hope to share some little knowledge on drawing I gathered so far. If You wish to be part of the school, fill the form below, but remember, You must be active and do your homework on time.
I don't think the lessons will be very often- one in two week, or bit more, as I value our time and I'm aware that You can't force inspiration. Plus I hope You will understand that putting together drawing and commentary on it may be bit time-consuming. However the first ones may be more often, weekly even.

In case You want to see if there's anything at all You can learn from my skills, check my thread in enchanted art gallery, because I know I'm not an expert and You may have more experience than I do.

To returning students- just let me know to copy your forms. And obviously You don't have to do your homeworks again, although You may like to copy them here.

Application form:

Fairy age range*:
Favourite tools:
Experience:
Favourite art theme/genre:
Favourite art piece:
Things You like to learn the most:
Thing You want to improve the most:

Grading System:

Because grading art is from my perspective pointless, I will grade only your engagement; which include putting your homework on time, answering all questions , as for any submitted artworks of Your I'll try to give You a comment on how I feel towards it, what was done very well and what could You do to make other aspects of your work better. I will grade your work (on this post) after full two weeks, so the grade includes also any corrections or further annotations You can make. As for the commentary I'll try to give it to You as soon as I can.

Grades of engagement:
[ :floraWinx: -outstanding, You put so much heart and though in it, I'm proud! ]
Very Happy -great job, it makes me very happy that You thought on it so well!
Smile - good job, I'm glad You made the effort and it's nice one!
Wink - not bad, You could go further with your answers (I know You can), but I'm glad You tried!
Neutral - I'm afraid You need to fill some more, or redo some answers
ehem_1  -bit delayed homework, but ok I accept it
Crying or Very sad -homework not on time (can change in either one above, or below)
[ Embarassed-homework never given (after 6 weeks) ]

Mensaje  Salomea Miér Abr 02, 2014 10:53 am

Students' Forms:
Name: Fiera
Fairy age range*: Fairy
Favourite tools: Pencils
Experience: Grade school classes, mostly, though I've studied art books and done drawing casually on my own off and on for pretty much my whole life
Favourite art theme/genre: Fantasy in general, and people in specific
Favourite art piece: La Scapigliata (da Vinci is my main man!)
Things You like to learn the most: Anything artistic. I like to dabble in all the arts--writing, dancing, painting, music, really anything.
Thing You want to improve the most: SHADING. And proportions as well. With a model I'm pretty good, but just working out of my head...not so great.
Thing You're the best at: In general? Writing? In regards to art? Hmm. Probably imitation. Put a still figure or image in front of my face and I can sketch it out pretty well. Ask me to shade it though...that's a problem.

Homework Lesson 1:
1. I believe I have everything on your list and then some, minus the fine liners. I shall have to pick some up, once I get another art store coupon.
2. Favorite tools? Pencils. I love the precision and the ability to correct, because I'm a huge perfectionist and I hypercriticize my work (which is why I've had such trouble really sticking with art over the years. I'll get excited and work hard for a while, but eventually I get so frustrated with all of my mistakes and disappointments that I give up for a while). And techniques? Hmm. Well, I don't know that I really have a favorite...most of my current drawings are just doodles in class and such. I try and make them as good as possible, but I don't really worry a lot over them.
3. Drawing lesson! (though I see it's already been posted Razz)
4. I'd like to learn more about charcoals and oil pastels (haven't used them in years) as well as painting. And of course drawing lessons on shading and proportions, as I DESPERATELY need to learn those two things.

Name:Fira
Fairy age range*: Mini Winx
Favourite tools: Markers and Pencils
Experience: Art Classes and sketching fashion designs
Favourite art theme/genre: Anime, Winx, Designs(Fashion)
Favourite art piece: Claude Monet's Water Lilies (1919)
Things You like to learn the most:Fashion designs, anime, winx,
Thing You want to improve the most: I want to take my fashion designs and anime to the next level
Thing You're the best at: Fashion Designs
Extra: I need help drawing faces and body structures.

Lesson 1- Gather your tools!

In this school I hope to teach You some basics and tricks of many type of painting and drawing, done mostly traditional media, but if there be a wish, I can focus bit more on digital. There of course too will be lessons on digital adjusting photos or scans of traditional art.

So what are we going to use?

Well let's start with pencils! Best if You can get at least three of them- one hard (2H to HB), one medium (HB to 2B) and one soft (6B-8B), but that's for your comfort two of them will do too- HB and one soft. So now check what You have already (if You have 4 or 5B, tell me).
As You noticed I mentioned HB in both hard and medium category- that's because of personal preferences of the artist and the fact it can work as both, sometimes even getting really soft feel, if for example using soft paper.

Many artists have whole range of pencils from really hard like 5H do the softest. Some even prefer to use black quality pencils to get really dark black- because if You look closely, graphite in normal pencils is bit shine-silver.

Obviously if You have pencils, You need eraser and sharpen.er (some ruler may be useful too). When it comes to erasers, just make sure yours do erase and does not smear easily, but it's not necessary of You to get  kneaded one from the start.

If we're here- some lesson on ink and inking- whether with fine-liners or stylus will be useful here and if You want on markers as well.

What other tools? It much depends on your and your requests, but I want to teach You working with colour pencils and watercolours. For colour pencils all You need is one set of those of your choice.
I personally prefer very soft ones, so much that I even use dry watercolour pencils, but if You like hard ones, that's also ok.
For watercolours again any set will work. Also if You want, we can talk about using watercolour pencils and watercolours. Also pastels (oil and soft) are optional.

I would also want to make a lesson (series of lessons) on acrylic painting. Some of You may have poster paints or tempera, those will work, although not everything may work the same for all three types, but everything in type. If You don't have any set- good news is You only need five of them- blue, yellow and red, plus black and white and every other colour can be made of those (You may also want to have green to limit the usage of yellow and blue).
I wish I could give You few lessons on oil paints, as nothing gives that nicely effects on for example human skin, as oils, but that would take month(s) to prepare and it would take equal time for to complete it.

If we have paints, we need brushes. In school You could hear that dark bristle brushes are for watercolour and light for other, or that the shape indicated the usage of the brush. Yeah... don't take all those things too serious... I can assure You I'm using same brushes on watercolour, acrylic, tempera and even oil. What is really important is to have a brush that feels very good in hand. Or rather two brushes- one smaller and one larger, but it's up to You to decided what size is small and big, just follow your intuition with that choice. That would be all You need for the class, just make sure the brushes are not very plastic, synthetic- ok, but ones that look as made of floor cleaning brush may not be what You really want (at least have the other different).

Well there's a question of paper left. It's easy to guess that watercolour, acrylic and pencils may require different surface. Now, it's up to You how You want to deal with that- have a sketchbook and  thicker watercolour/acrylic paper, or pencil/watercolour paper and canvas for acrylic. There are also some mixed media blocks (by Canson, Hahnemühle, or visual journal by Strathmore, ect), with paper that withstands water, layers of paint and still works good for pencils and ink, so if You're able to get it, maybe that's option for You. It's all your choice, I just want to see your homework on plain and rather neat paper.

So let's sum it all up. What You need for the entire classes:

-two or three graphite pencils
-set of colour pencils of choice
-eraser and sharpen.er
-two sizes of fine-liners or stylus and ink
-set of watercolour paints of choice
-set or five of acrylic, or poster paints
-two or three brushes of choice
-paper (canvas- additionally)
- empty jar, or cup of yoghurt/cream/ice-cream
-old newspaper/flyers
-old plastic trace, lid, or shallow plastic cup/container.

Don't worry if the list looks long, for first few lessons (weeks) all You need are graphite pencils, eraser and sharpen.er, and clean, white paper (of whatever kind and whatever thickness).

Homework:

1. Do a list of things You have and second of what You may need and post them.
2. Tell a bit about your favourite tools and technique.
3. Would You prefer next lesson to be about digital adjustment of scan or photo, or a drawing lesson?
4. Which of the lessons/media do You look the most forward to, which of possible additional lessons, would You like to have (if any)?

Lesson 2- Little Introduction- Light and Shade

Ok so let's start the lesson with drawing two things. A sun and a cat.
You can draw the sun simply or You can play a bit it it. Do it with anything You like, like colour pencils, markers, highlighters, etc.

Mea's Art School 2suns_zps38e5fdd1

Whichever You choose, just have your sun on little loose piece of paper. It's not mine idea, but I really like it and I hope You'll like it too ^^.
You have your sun? Cool. Let's grab the pencil and go to the cat. Draw just a small cat, can be outline, or You can go creative if You love cats and love drawing them.
Mine is just on outline and it's pretty, pretty tiny, about 3,5 cm, but yours can be bigger, maybe it will be even better if it's bigger.

Mea's Art School Cat_zpsc8e83cf9

Done with the cat, good. Now it would be nice if your cat sits on something, so let's draw a line (You can do it freehand or with a ruler). Little hint- don't draw the line just above your cat's paws/end, if You put it just bit higher it will look more spacious.

Mea's Art School Horizon_zpsbd1466f9

Much better, isn't it? So we can start with the actual lesson. Take your sun and place it maybe at lft corner. The sun is the source of light and so it I in this exercise, so now try to imagine where the shade will be. You can draw the shade with straight lines, cross-hatching, the way I done it- gentle move with side of the pencil. If You're but uncertain draw very, very lightly lines from the sun to the cat.

Mea's Art School Catshade1_zps3462ba10

Don't follow the lines directly, but use them as a guidelines for your intuition. Now take sun away and depending on how much place You have draw a new cat either at the same level with some space apart, or draw the can under the one You have. Again draw the horizon line and take your sun, but this time place it further and lower than previous time.

Mea's Art School Catshade2_zps67e1036d

Try not drawing any lines, just follow your intuition and place the shade.
The shade now should be bit longer and maybe different angle. And here You can see another tiny trick- leave a little uncovered space under the horizon line- the surface would naturally reflect some of the light.
Again draw, this time third cat and place the sun high above the animal (if You're bit smarter than I am, You will have it on your paper, but in fact, and further in your drawing practice, that doesn't matter at all. Still it would look nice here on scan).

Mea's Art School Catshade3_zpsfdc8bc6b

This time the shade is very short, but it's also more intense- darker.
Now You have your three cats done. I think it should give You an interesting result, which I can't show You, as I was working with the same, but that's good, You'll see it when You finish.
Can You guess what parts of day there are on those pictures?

Homework:

1. Follow the instruction above. Draw and scan (take photo) of your three cats with their shades. All three individually, as separate pictures.
2. Try to guess what  time of day each of the cat “was portrayed” at.

Now, as You see my way of writing and forming thoughts, You're aware it's a bit of reading and probably working.
So hopefully You now know what t expect and You can decide if the school is for You, or not.

[To be honest I don't think I will teach You drawing shades and perspective that way, that's just more a demonstration lesson (lesson 2).]

And if You enrol to the school- to do the both homework You have two weeks.

I am pretty impressed to see target spam at this forum... I am. Now I am not really sure if it's correct to call it spam and if it is really against rules at that matter actually. Plus the web address seems real, though it's not the most secure one, from what I've checked, gallery seems real and have fb profile... (I'm still astonished) but I doubt any of my students, or me can say that is on galery display level, yet...
Interesting situation...
